Four Simple Dos and Don'ts of Men’s Fashion

The holidays are upon us, and with the season comes plenty of opportunities to dress to impress. It’s daunting, right? With all the holiday hoopla and new style trends, it can be hard to figure out what’s “right” and “wrong” when it comes to men’s fashion.

We’re here to help. We’ve put together a few timeless dos and don’ts to follow this season, or whenever you need to look great. Have a few of your own? We’d love to hear from you in the comments section. Happy dressing!

The Dos

Do: Embrace the print.

Prints and patterns can be a great way to stand out while still looking stylish and sophisticated (and obviously we love them here at QUIETI). But as in as prints are right now, they can be pretty intimidating. Don’t be afraid to branch out slowly. Start with a simple printed shirt and pair it with plain trousers or jeans. You can see what type of prints you like best before taking on amore complex pattern.

Do: Have fun with color.

Winter isn’t solely about dark colors and neutrals. Play around with implementing some sophisticated accent colors into your daily wear, like a bright colored shirt paired with dark jeans (we’re big fans of theEntice for this one). From purples and pinks to blues and greens, you can get away with weaving color into your fall looks as long as you don’t go overboard.

Do: Try layering.

Not only islayering practical (hello, cold weather), it’s also a great way to weave that color we just talked about into your look. With pants and shirts, you’re pretty limited. But add in a jacket, vest, or heck, even a scarf, and boom! You get to have some fun. To do it right, make sure your outer layer is longer than your inner hem (so tuck in that shirt you wear with your sweater), and scale your patterns from lightest to strongest or vice-versa — just make sure your patterns have a steady grade.

Do: Wear the right socks.

We could write an entire post about wearing the right socks. Maybe one day we will. For now, we’ll keep it brief: if your look calls for dress socks, wear dress socks. Kill the whole sports-socks-with-suits thing, and don’t show so much ankle that people think you’re Steve Urkel. Oh, and have some fun. Crazy socks are in right now.

The Don’ts

Don’t: Wear ill-fitting pieces.

Thetailored look is timeless. Yet for some reason, finding clothes that actually fit your body type seems to be passe, especially for younger gents. Taking the time to find styles that work best for you is well worth it — as is finding a tailor to make sure your pants are hemmed and your suit fits perfectly.

Don’t: Use layering to cover up wrinkled clothing.

Layers are great. We’re all about the vests, jackets, scarves, etc. But you know what layers aren’t for? Covering up the fact that you didn't iron your shirt. We can still tell the wrinkles are there, guys. Just take the time to iron.

Don’t: Mismatch your belt and shoes.

This is a timeless fashion rule, men. Don’t mismatch your belt and shoes — ever! These should always, always, always go together, no matter how many layers you’re wearing.

Don’t: Dress down on your way up.

Whether it’s a date, a dinner with her family, or lunch with some bigwigs at work, you want to make a great impression. One of the easiest ways to do that is by looking your best. We know the world’s gotten a bit lax, but that’s no excuse to dress down on your way up. Keep it clean, sharp, and tucked in when you need to make ‘em say “wow”.
